Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Snow Queen'

Summary: 'Evirin' is a climbing Clematis variety which has narrower leaflets than the reference variety 'Snow Queen'. The sepals of 'Evirin' have 2 colours, whereas those of 'Snow Queen' have only 1 colour. The filaments of 'Evirin' are white, while those of 'Snow Queen' are pinkish purple on the top half and white at the base. There is slightly more undulation of the margins of the sepals in 'Evirin'.

Description:

'Evirin' is a climbing type Clematis variety which has sparse pubescence on the young shoots, consisting of long hairs. There are both simple and ternate leaves. The blade of the leaflet is short to medium in length and narrow to medium in width. The leaflets are narrowly ovate, with an acute to narrow acute apex and an acute base. The leaflet blade margins are entire. The leaflets of 'Evirin' are lobed with two to four lobes. They are medium green in colour and the new leaves have moderately weak rugosity. The lower side of the leaflets has medium pubescence.

'Evirin' bears solitary, single flowers, which are medium in diameter and rotate in shape. The flowers face upwards and outwards. In lateral view they are convex. There are 6 to 8 sepals, which are touching to overlapping. The flowers of 'Evirin' have no fragrance.

'Evirin' has sepals which are medium in length and width. They are elliptic in shape. In cross-section the sepals are concave. In longitudinal section they are flat to slightly reflexed. The apex is acute in shape with an acuminate tip and the base is type 2. The upper side of the sepals of 'Evirin' has two colours. The main colour of the upper side is light purple violet to violet blue and there is a purplish white central bar on each sepal. The lower side of the sepal is light purple with a whitish central bar. The margin of the sepals has strong to very strong undulation, giving them a ruffled appearance. There is no twisting along the longitudinal axis. Flowers of 'Evirin' have no petaloid stamens. The stamens have white filaments and purple anthers. The stigma is yellowish white.

'Evirin' flowers on both the previous year's and the current year's growth. It begins flowering early to mid-season (about week 24 in St. Thomas, Ontario).

Origin & Breeding History: 'Evirin' originated from a controlled crossing between two unnamed seedlings which was conducted at Domarie Vineries in Guernsey in 1990. The resulting seeds were planted in a controlled environment and 'Evirin' resulted from the selection of one plant from the seedlings.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Evirin' were established in the field during the spring of 2002, and observations and measurements were taken during the spring of 2003 at BioFlora, Inc., St. Thomas, Ontario. Eight rooted plants of the candidate and reference varieties were received April 20, 2002 and planted into 11.5cm pots and grown in a polyhouse. Young plants were transplanted to the field on June 3, 2002. Plants were spaced 60cm apart and trained to grow along a trellis. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plant parts of each variety during June 2003. All colour measurements were made using the 2001 RHS Colour Chart.
