'13N0770' has a larger fruit diameter than 'Royal Anne' and a smaller diameter than 'Sonnet'. '13N0770' has a cordate fruit shape while the fruit of 'Rainier' is round, 'Royal Anne' is elongate and 'Sonnet' is a flattened heart shape. The colour of the skin of '13N0770' is vermilion on a pale yellow ground colour while the skin of 'Sonnet' is wine red to mahogany. '13N0770' has cream-white coloured flesh while 'Sonnet' has pink flesh. '13N0770' has higher fruit acidity than 'Rainier' and higher sweetness than 'Rainier' and 'Royal Anne'. '13N0770' has a shorter fruit stalk than the reference varieties. '13N0770' matures later than the reference varieties.

Description:

'13N0770' is a sweet cherry variety. The trees have medium to strong vigour and have a spreading growth habit with a moderately dense crown. The one-year-old shoots have a horizontal attitude, no pubescence and no anthocyanin colouration. The shoots are medium in thickness and the internodes are medium to long in length. There are a medium to high number of lenticels. There are very few or no flower buds on the one-year-old shoots. The vegetative buds are medium to long in length and conical in shape. The buds are slightly held out from the shoot. The bud support is medium to large in size. The current year's shoot of '13N0770' has no pubescence and no anthocyanin colouration at the tip.

The leaf attitude in relation to the shoot is obliquely pointing upwards to horizontal. The leaves are elliptical in shape with a right angled tip and acute base. The leaf apex is acuminate and the profile in cross section is concave to flat. There is sparse pubescence on the lower side of the leaf and no variegation or anthocyanin colouration on the upper side. The leaves of '13N0770' are dark green with moderate glossiness. The leaf margins are serrate and the indentations are shallow to medium in depth. Colouration of the leaves just before leaf fall is brownish-grey. The petioles have anthocyanin colouration and usually more than two reddish-purple, round and kidney shaped nectaries.

'13N0770' flowers mid-season and produces a moderate number of self-fertile flowers which are single, white in colour and borne in clusters. The flower bud is white. The pedicel is moderately thick and has no pubescence. The flower petals are medium to large in size, round to broad elliptic in shape and are free to touching. The yellow-orange anthers produce pollen. The pistil is normal with no supplementary pistil and no pubescence.

'13N0770' produces large, cordate shaped fruit that is rounded to elliptic in lateral view. The largest diameter is between the middle and tip of the fruit. The skin colour is vermilion on a pale yellow ground colour and there is a medium number of light coloured dots which are medium in size. The suture is not very prominent. The fruit flesh of '13N0770' is cream-white in colour and moderately firm. The juice is not coloured. The fruit is high in sweetness, medium in acidity and strong in juiciness. The fruit apex is hollow and the stalk is medium in thickness. The skin has medium susceptibility to rain-induced cracking. The stone is semi-adherent to the flesh. The stone is medium to large in size and has a medium to large size relative to the fruit. The shape of the stone in lateral view is spherical to intermediate and asymmetrical. In front view it is elliptic and in basal view it is round. The keel is strongly developed. '13N0770' produces a large amount of fruit. Fruit setting is high and the fruit matures late.

Origin & Breeding History: '13N0770' originated from seed of a cross between 2N-63-20 and 'Stella'. The cross was made at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Research Station in Summerland, British Columbia in 1976. The seedling cross was designated '13N0770' in 1984. Two propagations were made on Prunus avium rootstock and planted out in a trial block at the Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre at Summerland in 1985. Evaluation on the selection began upon fruiting. '13N0770' was selected for fruit appearance, taste, flesh texture, tree quality, productivity and precocity.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for '13N0770' were conducted in 2000 and 2001, at the Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Summerland, British Columbia. The trials consisted of 43 trees of the candidate variety, on F12/1 rootstock. There were more than 10 trees of each reference variety. Unless indicated otherwise, measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements.
