Summary: 'Cougar CL' has more leaf lobes than 'Q2'. The leaf margin of 'Cougar CL' is sharp while it is rounded in 'Excel' and undulating in 'Q2'. 'Cougar CL' has more margin dentations than 'SP Bobcat CL', '46A65', 'Q2', and 'Excel'. The depth of the margin dentations are deeper in 'Cougar CL' than '46A65', 'Q2', and 'Excel'. 'Cougar CL' has a longer leaf petiole than '46A65'. The days to flowering of 'Cougar CL' is less than 'SP Bobcat', 'Q2', and 'Excel' but greater than '46A65'. 'Cougar CL' has a shorter flower petal length than 'Q2'. The flower petal width of 'Cougar CL' is narrower than '46A65' and 'Q2'. 'Cougar CL' has a horizontal silique attitude while in 'SP Bobcat CL' and '46A65' it is semi-erect. The silique length of 'Cougar CL' is shorter than 'Q2'. The beak length of 'Cougar CL' is shorter than 'Excel'. 'Cougar CL' is resistant to imidazolanine herbicides while '46A65', 'Q2', and 'Excel' are not.

Description:

'Cougar CL' is a imidazolanine resistant open pollinated spring canola variety. Leaf blades are dark green in colour with lobes present. The leaf margin is sharp with a very high density of dentations that are deep in depth. The leaves are long to very long in length and wide to very wide in width with a long to very long petiole. The yellow flower petals are short to medium in length and medium in width. The horizontal siliques are medium in length and narrow to medium in width with a short to medium beak and medium length pedicel. The plants are short to medium in height at maturity. Seed colour is black to light red brown. 'Cougar CL' has low erucic acid and glucosinolate contents. 'Cougar CL' is resistant to imidazolanine herbicides.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Cougar CL' is an imidazolanine tolerant doubled haploid line developed at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta from the F1 derived from a cross made in 1998. The microspore derived DH-line 'A01-144NI (Cougar CL)' was selected based on early maturity, tolerance to imidazolanine herbicides, high oil and protein contents, resistance to blackleg, and acceptable yield potential. The same selection criteria plus yield were used the following two years of Co-op yield trials to further select elite lines. Yield trials were conducted in multiple sites throughout Western Canada in 2001 (Private Data Co-op) and 2002 (Public Data Co-op). Concurrent to yield trial testing, field trials were conducted for herbicide resistance, and disease testing for blackleg and white rust.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials were conducted at Rosthern, Saskatchewan in 2002 and 2003. Plots consisted of 6 rows each 5.5 metres long with 20 cm between rows. There were 4 replicates laid out in a RCB design.
