Origin & Breeding History: 'Kakegawa S64' originated from a hybridization conducted in November of 1998 in Kakegawa, Japan. The female parent was variety 'Kakegawa S1' and the male parent was an unnamed breeding line designated '97-1176' with deep rose coloured flowers, mounding plant growth habit and short internodes. In February of 1999, F1 seed was sown and the resulting seedlings were transplanted outdoors. Three plants with blue flowers were selected and intercrossed to produce F2 generation seed. From the F2 plants, two were selected for their extra compact to mounded plant growth habit and vegetatively propagated. In August of 2002, these selections were planted in 9 cm hanging pots for evaluation in greenhouse and open field trials. Using new vegetatively propagated plants, one selection was further evaluated in Salinas, California, USA during 2003. This selection was named 'Kakegawa S64'.

Tests & Trials: The test and trial for 'Kakegawa S64' was conducted in a polyhouse at Variety Rights Management in Oxford Station, Ontario during the summer of 2005. The trial included 15 plants of each variety grown in 10 cm pots. The plants were spaced 13 cm apart. All colour characteristics were determined using the 2001 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) colour chart and measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
