Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'DrisBlueFifteen' ('136d5') and 'DrisBlueFive'

Summary: The one-year-old shoot of 'DrisBlueSeventeen' is greyish red, while the one-year-old shoot of 'DrisBlueFifteen' is greenish red and 'DrisBlueFive' is reddish brown. The leaf blade of 'DrisBlueSeventeen' has a very large length to width ratio whereas the leaf blade of 'DrisBlueFive' has a medium length to width ratio. The shape of the corolla of 'DrisBlueSeventeen' is urceolate shape whereas the corolla for 'DrisBlueFifteen' is ellipsoid shape. The anthocyanin colouration of the corolla tube of 'DrisBlueSeventeen' is of absent or very weak intensity whereas the anthocyanin colouration of the corolla tube of 'DrisBlueFifteen' is of an absent or very weak to weak intensity and 'DrisBlueFive' is of a weak intensity. The fruit of 'DrisBlueSeventeen' has a deep calyx basin whereas the calyx basin of 'DrisBlueFifteen' is shallow to medium deep and 'DrisBlueFive' is shallow.

Description:

PLANT: medium to strong vigour, semi-upright growth habit, fruiting on one-year-old shoots only, vegetative bud burst begins mid to late season
ONE-YEAR-OLD SHOOT: greyish red, short to medium length internodes along upper half

LEAF: long, medium width, very large length to width ratio, elliptic shape, medium to dark intensity of green upper side, entire margin

FLOWERING: begins early to mid-season on one-year-old shoots, long inflorescence excluding peduncle
FLOWER BUD: strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration
COROLLA: urceolate shape
COROLLA TUBE: medium size, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration on outer side, ridges present

INFRUCTESCENCE: sparse to medium density
UNRIPE FRUIT: light to medium intensity of green colour, ripening begins early to mid-season on one-year-old shoots
FRUIT: large to very large, oblate in longitudinal section, soft, medium sweetness and acidity
FRUIT SKIN: strong bloom intensity, dark blue skin (after removal of bloom)
CALYX BASIN: very large, deep
SEPALS: semi-erect to horizontal, incurving

Origin & Breeding History: 'DrisBlueSeventeen' originated from a cross between the proprietary varieties '136D 2', as the female parent, and '8B 4', as the male parent, made in 2004 in Santa Cruz County, California, USA. 'DrisBlueSeventeen' was selected from the resulting progeny in 2006 in Santa Cruz County, California, USA, for its mid range chill requirement, yield, and fruit quality. Subsequent asexual propagation by softwood cuttings took place in Monterey County, California.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'DrisBlueSeventeen' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 2018/3441, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trial was conducted by the Direção Geral de Alimentação e Veterinária in Escaroupim, Portugal between 2019 and 2022.
