Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC WM-2', 'Island' and 'Vibrant'

Summary: The plants of 'CDC WM-3' flower mid-season while the plants of 'Vibrant' flower late season. Excluding the beak, the pod of 'CDC WM-3' is shorter than that of 'Island'. The beak of the pod of 'CDC WM-3' is longer than that of 'Vibrant'. The secondary colour of the pod of 'CDC WM-3' is brown yellow distributed as flecks whereas there is no secondary colour on the pod of 'Vibrant'. At the dry stage, the pod of 'CDC WM-3' has strong constrictions between seeds while the constrictions are moderate between the seeds of 'Vibrant'. The main colour of the seed of 'CDC WM-3' is beige while the seed of 'Island' is darker beige. The seed of 'CDC WM-3' is slow darkening while that of 'Island' is a regular darkening seed. The seed weight of 'CDC WM-3' is less than that of 'CDC WM-2' and greater than that of 'Island' and 'Vibrant'. The plants of 'CDC WM-3' mature earlier than those of 'CDC WM-2' and 'Vibrant'.

Description:

PLANT: dwarf and indeterminate growth type, medium length guides, 50% of plants begin flowering mid-season

LEAF: medium green, strong rugosity
TERMINAL LEAFLET: small to medium sized, triangular to circular shaped, medium length tip

INFLORESCENCE: positioned at the same level as foliage at full flowering
FLOWER: white standard, white wing

POD: ovate in cross-section, green ground colour, sparse density of brown yellow flecks as secondary colour, stringiness of ventral suture present, absent or very weak to weak degree of curvature, acute to truncate at distal part excluding beak, weak curvature of beak, smooth or slightly rough surface, strong constrictions between seeds at dry stage

SEED: Pinto type, medium weight, rectangular shape in longitudinal cross-section, medium elliptic shape in cross-section, medium width in cross-section, medium length, two colours, main colour beige, spotted brown secondary colour on entire grain, slow darkening

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC WM-3' (experimental designation NN11-2) was developed at the Crop Development Centre at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. It was derived from a bulk of F2 plants grown in 2010. After some plants drowned due to a wet spring, the survivors were bulked, harvested and seperated into market class. The exact parents of 'CDC WM-3' are unknown. Screening and selections were done from the F3 to F8 generations. Selections were based on days to flower, days to maturity, yield, plant height, lodging, pod clearance, seed weight, disease resistance and canning traits. In the F6 generation, single plants were selected and the resulting progeny were grown in plots for two generations with selection for uniformity, days to maturity, plant type and seed size. In the F9 generation, 43 sub-lines were used to establish breeder seed. 'CDC WM-3' was evaluated in Short Season Narrow Row Dry Bean Cooperative Registration Trials for two years; 2016 and 2017.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'CDC WM-3' were conducted in the summer of 2018 and 2019 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Plots consisted of 3 rows with a row spacing of 30 cm and a row length of 3.66 metres. Plants within a row were spaced at 48 seeds per square metre. There were 2 replicates. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year except seed weight, which was based on 8 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student`s t-test.
