Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Copeland' and 'AC Metcalfe'

Summary: At booting, the frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves for 'CDC Bow' is low whereas it is medium to high for 'CDC Copeland' and of medium frequency for 'AC Metcalfe'. Including awns, the plants of 'CDC Bow' are shorter than the plants of both reference varieties. The first segment of the rachis of 'CDC Bow' is of medium length and curvature while that of 'CDC Copeland' is short with very weak curvature and that of 'AC Metcalfe' is short with weak curvature.

Description:

PLANT: two row, spring malting-type barley, spike emergence occurs mid-season
YOUNG PLANT: semi-erect growth habit at tillering, absent or very sparse pubescence on lower leaf sheaths

FLAG LEAF (AT BOOTING): low frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, absent or very sparse pubescence on blade
FLAG LEAF SHEATH: medium glaucosity, absent or very sparse pubescence
AURICLES: weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration, sparse pubescence on margins

SPIKE: medium to strong glaucosity, semi-erect attitude, v-shaped collar, parallel sided shape, lax to medium density, sterile spikelet attitude is parallel to weakly divergent, glume and awn of the median spikelet are equal to length of grain
LEMMA AWNS: weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the tips, longer than length of spike, rough spiculations on margins
FIRST SEGMENT OF RACHIS: medium length and curvature

KERNEL: whitish aleurone layer, long rachilla hairs, husk present, absent or very weak anthocyanin colouration of nerves of lemma, strong spiculation of inner lateral nerves of dorsal side of lemma, hairiness of ventral furrow absent, clasping disposition of lodicules, horseshoe and incomplete horseshoe shape of basal markings, medium length and width

AGRONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS: good resistance to lodging and shattering, good tolerance to straw breakage, fair to good tolerance to drought, good malting quality

DISEASE REACTION: susceptible to True Loose Smut (Ustilago nuda)

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Bow' (experimental designation 'TR11127' and 'SM080361') was developed from the cross of 'SM04261' / 'TR05285' made in 2005 in a greenhouse at the Crop Development Centre at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The F1 generation was grown as a bulk population in a winter nursery in New Zealand and the F2 generation was grown as a bulk population in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. During the winter of 2006 and 2007, the F3 and F4 generations were grown as single seed derived lines. 'CDC Bow' was selected from an F5 hill plot in Saskatoon in 2007 and the resulting seed was bulked as the line designated 'SM080361'. From 2008 to 2010, testing was done in the Crop Development Centre yield trials, followed by further testing in the Western Cooperative Two-Row Barley Registration Trials as 'TR11127' during 2011-2012. 'CDC Bow' was selected for its good agronomic performance and physical grain quality.

Tests & Trials: The tests and trials for 'CDC Bow' were conducted during the 2014 and 2015 growing seasons at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Plots consisted of 5 rows with a row length of 3.7 metres and a row spacing of 0.2 metres. There were 3 replicates arranged in an RCB design. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety in each year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
