Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Dolly' and 'AC Metcalfe'

Summary: The intensity of the anthocyanin colouration of the auricles of the flag leaf and the lemma awn tips of 'CDC Trey' is weaker than in 'CDC Dolly'. 'CDC Trey' has stronger pubescence on the flag leaf than 'CDC Dolly'. The anthocyanin colouration of the nerves of the lemma when the kernel is beginning to ripen of 'CDC Trey' is weaker than 'CDC Dolly' but stronger than 'AC Metcalfe'. 'CDC Trey' has a weaker spiculation of the inner lateral nerves of the dorsal side of the lemma of the kernal than 'AC Metcalfe'. The kernel rachilla hair length of 'CDC Trey' is shorter than 'AC Metcalfe'. 'CDC Trey' is more resistant to lodging than 'CDC Dolly'.

Description:

'CDC Trey' is a two-row spring, feed barley variety which has a semi-erect juvenile growth habit with green coleoptiles. At tillering, the plants have an intermediate growth habit, with no pubescence on the sheaths of the lower leaves. At booting, 25-50% of the plants have recurved flag leaves. There is medium pubescence on the blade and very weak to weak on the sheath of the flag leaf. The sheath of the flag leaf has strong glaucosity. The auricles on the flag leaves have medium anthocyanin colouration. There is weak pubescence on the auricle margins.

Spike emergence of 'CDC Trey' is mid season. The collar shape is platform to cup shaped. At the beginning of anthesis, there is weak to medium anthocyanin colouration at the tips of the lemma awns. At the end of pollen development, spike attitude is semi-erect with a strong glaucosity. When the kernels are fully developed, the spike is parallel in shape and medium to dense in density. When the kernels are beginning to ripen, the sterile spikelets are parallel to weakly divergent. The first segment of the rachis is medium to long in length with a medium to strong curvature. The lemma awns are longer than the spike. The margins of the lemma awns are rough.

The kernels of 'CDC Trey' are husked with medium anthocyanin colouration of the nerves of the lemma of the kernel. The aleurone layer is whitish and the rachilla hairs are short. Spiculation of the inner lateral nerves of the dorsal side of the lemma are absent to very weak with no hairiness of the ventral furrow. Disposition of the lodicules is clasping. The kernel is medium to long and wide with incomplete horseshoe shaped basal markings.

'CDC Trey' is moderately resistant to moderately susceptible to Common root rot (Cochliobolus sativus, Fusarium spp.). It is susceptible to Scald (Rhynchosporium secalis), spot blotch (Cochliobolus sativus), true loose smut (Ustilago nuda), and Barley yellow dwarf virus. It is moderately susceptible to susceptible for Fusarium head blight (Fusarium graminearum, Gibberella zeae). It is moderately resistant to Net Blotch (Pyrenophora teres), resistant to moderately resistant to Stem rust (Puccina graminis), and resistant to False Loose Smut (Ustilago nigra) and Covered smut (Ustilago hordie). 'CDC Trey' has good lodging and shattering resistance, good tolerance to straw and neck breaking and has fair to good tolerance to drought.

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Trey' which was known by the experimental designation TR359, originated from the cross TR333 x ND13167 made at the Crop Development Center, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1995 using the pedigree breeding system. The F1 and F2 generations were grown as bulks with the F1 grown in a winter nursery in New Zealand. The F3 and F4 generations were advanced in a greenhouse in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan using the single seed descent method. 'TR359' was grown and selected as a single F5 hill plot at Saskatoon in 1997. The seed from that F5 hill plot was bulked as the line which became 'CDC Trey'. It was tested in the Crop Development Centre yield trials in 1998-1999, followed by testing in the Western Canadian Two Row trials during 2000-2001.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'CDC Trey' were conducted at the Crop Development Center, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2002/2003. Plots consisted of 2 rows, 3.7 metres long with about 0.4 metres between rows. There were two replicates arranged in an RCB design.
