Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'AC Metcalfe' and 'CDC Stratus'

Summary: 'Newdale' differs from the reference varieties, 'AC Metcalfe' and 'CDC Stratus' in frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, flag leaf length and width, spike length, plant height, kernel basal markings and disease reaction. 'Newdale' has 25-50% of plants with recurved flag leaves whereas 'CDC Stratus' has approximately 75% of plants with recurved flag leaves. The flag leaves of 'Newdale' are longer than those of 'AC Metcalfe' and wider than both 'AC Metcalfe' and 'CDC Stratus'. The spike of 'Newdale' is longer than both reference varieties. The plants of 'Newdale'are shorter than those of 'AC Metcalfe'. The kernel basal markings of 'Newdale' are horseshoe-shaped whereas they are a transverse crease in 'CDC Stratus'. 'Newdale' is moderately resistant to Spot blotch (Cochliobolus sativus) whereas 'AC Metcalfe' and 'CDC Stratus' are susceptible and susceptible to very susceptible respectively. 'Newdale' is moderately resistant to Net blotch (Pyrenophora teres) whereas both reference varieties are moderately susceptible. 'Newdale' is susceptible to True loose smut (Ustilago nuda) whereas 'AC Metcalfe' and 'CDC Stratus' are resistant and moderately susceptible respectively.


'Newdale' is a two-row spring, malting barley variety which has a semi-erect juvenile growth habit with whitish coleoptiles. At tillering, the plants are erect, with no pubescence on the sheaths of the lower leaves. At booting, 25-50% of the plants have recurved flag leaves. There is no pubescence on the blade and sheath of the flag leaf. The sheath of the flag leaf has strong glaucosity. The auricles on most flag leaves have no anthocyanin colouration with a small percentage (approximately 15%) having very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration. There is no pubescence on the auricle margins.

Spike emergence of 'Newdale' is mid to late season. The collar shape is predominantly platform to slightly v-shaped with some open collars observed occasionally. At the beginning of anthesis, there is no anthocyanin colouration at the tips of the lemma awns. At the end of pollen development, spike attitude is erect to semi-erect with medium to strong glaucosity. When the kernels are fully developed, the spike is parallel to slightly tapering in shape and medium in density. When the kernels are beginning to ripen, the sterile spikelets are parallel to weakly divergent. The first segment of the rachis is medium in length with a weak curvature. The lemma awns are longer than the spike. The margins of the lemma awns are rough.

The kernels of 'Newdale' are husked with no anthocyanin colouration of the nerves of the lemma of the kernel. The aleurone layer is whitish and the rachilla hairs are long. Spiculation of the inner lateral nerves of the dorsal side of the lemma are medium to strong with no hairiness of the ventral furrow. Disposition of the lodicules is clasping. The kernel is medium in length and width with horseshoe shaped basal markings.

'Newdale' is moderately resistant to Common root rot (Cochliobolus sativus, Fusarium spp.), Net blotch (Pyrenophora teres) and Spot blotch (Cochliobolus sativus). It is susceptible to Septoria speckled leaf blotch (Septoria passerinii) and Scald (Rhynchosporium secalis). It is moderately resistant to Stem rust (Puccinia graminis) except for race QCCJ and moderately resistant to moderately susceptible to Fusarium head blight (Fusarium graminearum; perfect state Gibberella zeae). It is moderately resistant to Covered smut (Ustilago hordie) and False loose smut, Black semi-loose smut (Ustilago nigra). It is susceptible to True loose smut (Ustilago nuda) and Yellow dwarf/Barley yellow dwarf virus. 'Newdale' has good lodging and shattering resistance and malting quality.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Newdale', which was known by the experimental designation TR258, originated from the cross CDC Stratus//TR236/WM862-6 made in Brandon, Manitoba in 1991. The F1 was grown as a bulk increase in the greenhouse and the F2 as a bulk plot in the field at Brandon in 1992. The F3 was grown as a bulk increase in the California winter nursery where heads were selected based on appearance, kernel plumpness and maturity. Heads were threshed in bulk and approximately 2000 seeds were planted as F4 spaced plants at Brandon in 1993. Selections in this generation were based on agronomic appearance and disease resistance. Each plant was harvested individually and planted as a single F5 progeny row in the field at Brandon in 1994. Progeny selections were based on height, maturity, lodging resistance, general appearance, resistance to net blotch and spot blotch, and preliminary malting quality analyses. Preliminary replicated yield tests of selected F6 lines were conducted in Brandon in 1995. Additional selection criteria included yield, heading date, kernel plumpness, test weight, kernel weight, advanced malting quality analyses and resistance to stem rust, net blotch, spot blotch, scald and smuts. 'Newdale' was grown in advanced yield tests at 6 locations in western Canada in 1996 and in 5 locations in 1997. It was advanced to the Western Cooperative Two-row Barley Registration Test in 1998 as TR258.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Newdale' were conducted at the Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada Research Centre, in Brandon, Manitoba during the summers of 2001 and 2002. The trials consisted of four replicates per variety. Each replicate consisted of six rows, 18 cm apart and four metres long, seeded at a density of 1200 seeds per plot. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 20 measurements. Means for height are based on means from 4 site-years, including the 2 Plant Breeders' Rights trials. Means are based on each test, not individual replications. Means for kernel weights are based on the means from 6 site-years, including the 2 Plant Breeders' Rights trials.
