Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Wood's Blue'

Summary: 'Kiestrbl' is an aster variety which produces taller, bushier plants than 'Wood's Blue'. The stems of 'Kiestrbl' are striate and sparsely pubescent, whereas the stems of 'Woods' Blue' are smooth and densely pubescent. 'Kiestrbl' has smaller flower heads with more ray florets than 'Wood's Blue'. The ray florets of 'Kiestrbl' are a slightly darker violet colour than those of the reference variety.

Description:

'Kiestrbl' is an aster variety which produces tall plants with a bushy rounded growth habit and many branches. The stems are thin, striate, and light green in colour with no anthocyanin colouration. Pubescence on the stems is sparse. The leaves are simple, linear in shape, and have an acute apex. The leaf margins are entire, and there is no pubescence on the upper or lower surfaces of the leaf blade.

'Kiestrbl' has erect flower heads with many, violet coloured ray florets. The ray florets are linear in shape with a tri-dentate apex. A yellow disc is present.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Kiestrbl' originated from a controlled cross conducted in 1997, as part of a breeding program in Gensingen, Germany. The female parent was a proprietary selection identified as 98-s-1495 and the male parent was a proprietary selection identified as 98-r-1494. The new variety was selected based on flower form and colour, and excellent performance in the garden and in pots RHS Colour Chart.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Kiestrbl' were conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2004 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trials consisted of 15 plants of each variety. The plants were grown from rooted cuttings, transplanted into 15 cm pots on May 27th, 2004. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on August 18th, 2004. All colour measurements were made using the 2001 RHS Colour Chart.
