Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Scifresh'

Summary: The fruit size of 'Scilate' is large to very large while the fruit is small to medium for 'Scifresh'. The fruit shape is conic for 'Scilate' while it is globose for 'Scifresh'. The time of maturity of the fruit for eating is very late for 'Scilate' while it is mid-season for 'Scifresh'.

Description:

TREE: medium to strong vigour, ramified type, spreading growth habit, bears fruit on spurs only, begins flowering early
ONE-YEAR-OLD-SHOOT: medium to thick, medium length of internode, reddish brown on sunny side, strong pubescence on upper half, medium to many lenticels

PETIOLE: medium length, large extent of colouration from the base
LEAF: upward attitude in relation to shoot, medium length, narrow to medium width, high length to width ratio (strongly elongated), medium green on upper side, bicrenate incisions of margin, medium density of pubescence on lower side

FLOWER: dark pink at balloon stage, medium diameter when petals pressed flat, intermediate arrangement of petals, anthers on same level in relation to stigmas

YOUNG FRUIT: large to very large extent of anthocyanin over colour
FRUIT: large to very large, tall to very tall, very large in diameter, height to diameter ratio is large, conic shape, absent or very weak ribbing, moderate crowning of calyx end, small to medium eye, short to medium sepal, absent or weak presence of bloom and greasiness of skin, closed or slightly open locules in transverse section, ripens very late
FRUIT SKIN: whitish green ground colour, relative area of over colour is medium to high, medium red over colour distributed as a solid flush with strong striped pattern, width of over colour stripes is medium, few to medium number of lenticels, medium sized lenticels

Origin & Breeding History: 'Scilate' was bred and developed at the Plant and Food Research site in Havelock North, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. It originated from a controlled cross conducted in 1985 between the variety 'Royal Gala', as the female parent and the variety 'Braeburn', as the male parent in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. The resulting seeds were germinated in 1986 and the seedlings were transplanted to an orchard in 1988. One seedling designated A022R29T022, later named 'Scilate', was selected for its fruit qualities in 1992 and propagated onto MM106 clonal root stocks. After further evaluation in 1999, 'Scilate' was propagated onto rootstocks for the National collection and planted in trial blocks and grower orchards.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'Scilate' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number APP170, grant number 2924, received from the New Zealand Plant Variety Rights Office, New Zealand. The trial was conducted by the Cultivar Centre, Plant and Food Research, Havelock North, New Zealand from 2008 to 2010.
