Summary: 'SJCA38R6A74' has a spreading to drooping growth habit while 'Macspur' has an upright to spreading growth habit. The angle of bearing branches with the trunk is higher for 'SJCA38R6A74' than for 'Macspur'. 'SJCA38R6A74' has a thinner dormant one year old shoot than 'Macspur'. 'SJCA38R6A74' has a narrower leaf blade and smaller flower diameter than 'Macspur'. From side view the fruit of 'SJCA38R6A74' is symmetric while it is asymmetric for 'Macspur'. 'SJCA38R6A74' has a longer fruit stalk than 'Macspur'. 'SJCA38R6A74' has a darker over colour on the skin and more prominent lenticels than 'Macspur'. The locules are closed for 'SJCA38R6A74' while they are open for 'Macspur'. 'SJCA38R6A74' has no browning of the flesh one hour after being cut while 'Macspur' has very strong browning present.
'SJCA38R6A74' is an apple variety which has moderately vigourous trees with a spreading to drooping growth habit. The angle of bearing branches with the trunk of the tree is 80 to 120 degrees. The fruit is born on both spurs and shoots. The one-year old shoots have medium pubescence, a medium shine on the bark and medium to strong flexibility. The shoots have a few to medium number of lenticels which are small to medium in size. The sunny side of the shoot is reddish brown in colour. The lateral bud is large in size with a pointed tip. The position of the bud relative to the axis is adpressed and the bud support is small in size. The shoots of 'SJCA38R6A74' have a white growing tip.
In cross section the shoot tip leaves of 'SJCA38R6A74' are concave to straight. Pubescence on the upper side is very weak. The lower side of the shoot tip leaves are green in colour. The leaves are not lobed and are medium to large in size. The leaves are oriented in an outwards direction. The apex of the leaf of 'SJCA38R6A74' is acuminate and cuspidate, the margins are mainly serrate and there is weak to medium glossiness on the upper side and dense pubescence on the lower side. Anthocyanin colouration of the veins is weak and there is no anthocyanin on the upper side of the leaf blade. The leaf blade is dark green in colour on the upper side. 'SJCA38R6A74' has small stipules that are not always present.
The time of bud burst for 'SJCA38R6A74' is mid-season. In full balloon stage the bud is medium pink in colour. The flowers are single with a green pedicel. The petals are ovate in shape and the margins are touching to overlapping.
The fruit of 'SJCA38R6A74' are very large in size and globose to flat globose in shape. In side view the fruit is symmetric. There is very weak ribbing present and weak crowning at the distal end. The eye is small to medium in size and closed to half open. The calyx of 'SJCA38R6A74' is persistent and the sepals are medium in length and free to touching. 'SJCA38R6A74' has a shallow to medium eye basin which is medium to broad in width. The fruit stalk is thin to medium and long in length. The stalk cavity is medium to deep in depth and medium to broad in width. The fruit have a smooth surface with a high amount of bloom and low amount of waxiness. The fruit skin is medium to thick and not translucent. The ground colour is green yellow, with a high to very high amount of dark purple-red over colour. The over colour pattern is a solid wash. There is no russet on 'SJCA38R6A74. The lenticels are small to medium in size and moderately prominent. The flesh of the fruit is white in colour. In cross section the core line is absent or very weakly conspicuous. The locules are closed.
'SJCA38R6A74' matures mid season. At maturity the seeds are brown to dark brown in colour and long conical in shape. The skin has a weak tendency to crack in the stem cavity. There is no browning of the flesh one hour after being cut with a stainless steel knife. The fruit flesh is fine in texture when ripe, has no grittiness and medium juiciness. There is a medium to high percentage of malic acid in the fruit juice and a medium percentage of total fruit sugars.
Origin & Breeding History: 'SJCA38R6A74' originated from a cross between 'Linda' and 'Jonamac', made at Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada, Horticultural Research and Development Center in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec in 1971. The variety has been under evaluation since 1985.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'SJCA38R6A74' were conducted at The Horticultural Research and Development Center in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, during 2000 to 2005. The trials consisted of 4 trees of each variety, grafted onto M26 rootstock. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 10 measurements and colour determinations were made using the 1995 Royal Horticultural Society colour chart.
