Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Stajello'

Summary: 'Zalsasenan' differs from the reference variety, 'Stajello' in stem thickness, foliage density, number and length of branches in umbel, floret size, depth of emargination of the apex of the outer lateral tepal and colour of anthers at the start of anther dehiscence. The stems of 'Zalsasenan' are medium to thick with sparse to medium density of foliage whereas the stems of 'Stajello' are thin to medium in thickness with medium to dense foliage. 'Zalsasenan' has more branches of the umbel which are longer than those of 'Stajello'. The florets of 'Zalsasenan' are smaller than those of 'Stajello'. The outer lateral tepal of 'Zalsasenan' is obovate with medium to deep emargination of the apex whereas it is orbicular in shape with shallow to medium deep emargination of the apex in 'Stajello'. The anthers of 'Zalsasenan' are olive green with red spots at the start of anther dehiscence whereas they are yellow in 'Stajello'.

Description:

'Zalsasenan' is a cut flower alstroemeria. The stems are medium to thick with foliage which is sparse to medium in density. The leaves are narrow elliptic and slightly recurved along the longitudinal axis of the blade.

The inflorescence has medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the branches. The small to medium-sized floret is yellow with a medium-sized tepal spread. The outer tepal is obovate with medium to deep emargination at the apex. The outer tepal is yellow with an orange-red secondary colour in the middle of the apex. The outer tepal has no stripes on the inner side. The inner lateral tepal is obovate with a very small orange-red secondary colour at the apex. The inner lateral tepal has a few to medium number of medium-sized stripes on the inner side. The main colour of the filament is red. Origin & Breeding History: 'Zalsasenan' originated by crossing 96411-004 with 97915-004PN, made in Rijsenhout, the Netherlands in 1998. Selection criteria included flower colour and form.

Tests & Trials: 'Zalsasenan' was tested in Langley, British Columbia in the fall of 2003. The trials included ten plants of the candidate and reference varieties. Plants were started from rhizomes and grown in 25cm pots. Measured characteristics were based on ten measurements and colour determinations were made using the 2001 RHS Colour chart.
