General
- Origin & Breeding: bred from the cross (A77182-1 x A75188-3) made in 1982, in Aberdeen, Idaho, and selected by the United States Department of Agriculture - Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) and the Agricultural Experiment Stations of Idaho, Oregon and Washington, USA. Released in 2002.

Botanical Features
- Plants: medium height, semi-erect; stems moderately pigmented; prominent waved single wings; nodes slightly swollen, not pigmented.
- Leaves: olive green, open; midribs and petioles not pigmented.
Terminal leaflets: narrowly ovate; tip acute to acuminate; base acute to obtuse, slightly asymmetrical; weakly wavy margins.
Primary leaflets: small; narrowly ovate; tip acute to acuminate; base obtuse to cordate, asymmetrical. - Flowers: high flowering profusion, white corolla with prominent star; bright yellow anthers; flower buds weakly pigmented; calyx moderately pigmented; peduncles not to weakly pigmented.
- Tubers: oval to oblong; flaky buff coloured skin; few to moderately numerous shallow eyes, predominantly apical; slightly prominent eyebrows; white flesh.
- Sprouts: ovoid; red-violet; base moderately pubescent, strongly pigmented; tip weakly pubescent, moderately pigmented, closed habit; short lateral shoots.
Agricultural Features
High yielding russet potato cultivar. Good resistance to second growth, hollow heart and blackspot bruise. Medium dormancy period. Very good storage capability. High specific gravity.
Alturas has resistance to cold-sweetening which makes it suitable for processing out of storage as french fries and other frozen potato products.
- Utilization: very good for baking and processing.
- Chief Markets: dehydration processing, frozen french fries processing, and fresh market.
Reaction to Diseases
Highly resistant: verticillium wilt (Verticillium dahliae), early blight.
Moderately resistant: tuber net necrosis.
Moderately susceptible: common scab, late blight, corky ringspot, Fusarium dry rot.
Susceptible: leafroll, PVY, PVS.
