What to do when a food recall happens

Check the recall notice for details

Examine the recalled products by comparing:

  • brand name
  • product name
  • container size
  • container codes (such as UPC and lot number)

A recall may only apply to specific versions of a product that may be sold under different brands or in various stores. To know if your product is affected, check the recall notice and make sure all the details – brand, size, UPC, container code, and location match exactly. If they don't, your product is not part of the recall.

If you have a recalled product

  • Do not consume, serve, sell, or distribute it.
  • Dispose of it safely or return it to the location where it was purchased.
  • If unsure, contact your retailer for confirmation.
  • If you feel sick after consuming a recalled product, seek medical advice.

Report a concern

If you suspect a food or drink product is unsafe, report it to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) through our food complaint page.

For questions about a specific recalled product, contact the company directly.
