Status of the bovine tuberculosis investigation – Manitoba (2025)
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has launched an investigation into a case of bovine tuberculosis in an animal originating from the Pembina Valley Region of Manitoba that was slaughtered at a federally registered abattoir in Manitoba.
Investigation status as of 2025-06-16
- On June 9, 2025, culture testing by the CFIA Ottawa Laboratory Fallowfield found Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex in tissues collected from a 7-year-old cow at a federally registered slaughter facility in Manitoba
- On June 13, 2025, the presence of Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis) was confirmed
- Working with the information in the DairyTrace system, the CFIA identified a herd in Manitoba as the herd of origin of the infected animal
This herd has been placed under quarantine until testing and depopulation can be completed. - Additional information of the disease investigation process
Notices to industry
Status of the bovine tuberculosis investigation – Saskatchewan (2024)
The CFIA investigation and testing following a November 29, 2024, case of bovine tuberculosis (bovine TB) has detected the disease in the herd where the infected animal spent most of its life before slaughter. The CFIA disease investigation is ongoing.
Investigation status as of 2025-06-05
- There have been 25 cases of bovine TB in the single infected herd.
- The depopulation of the infected herd is complete.
- The CFIA has identified and started testing for higher risk herds:
- 7 lifeline herds (herds traced from an infected animal in the infected herd), with 3 herds released from quarantine
- 32 trace-out herds (herds that received animals from the infected herd), with 8 herds released from quarantine
- The CFIA continues to identify and prepare for testing on:
- trace-in herds (herds that provided animals to the infected herd)
- contact herds (herds that shared a fence line or may have co-mingled with the infected herd)
- proximity herds (herds within 5 km of the infected herd)
- Additional information of the disease investigation process
Notices to industry

Status of the bovine tuberculosis investigation – Saskatchewan (2023)
The CFIA has traced the movement of animals to and from the infected herd to identify and eliminate the source and any potential spread of the disease.
All herd testing is complete. No definitive source of infection identified.
Investigation status as of 2024-11-29
Infected herd
- 1 infected herd which has been humanely depopulated and all testing is complete
- 32 confirmed cases of bovine tuberculosis
- the bovine TB strain found in the infected herd is consistent with the strain found in the infected animal in the United States that was traced back to the Saskatchewan herd
- the strain found in the infected herd is not a close match to any strain previously reported in livestock or wildlife in North America
Life line herds (herds traced from an infected animal in the infected herd)
- the single life line herd has been released from quarantine
- all herd testing is complete
Contact herds (herds that shared a fence line or may have co-mingled with the infected herd)
- the single contact herd has been released from quarantine
- all herd testing is complete
Trace-in herds (herds that provided animals to the infected herd)
- 2 trace-in herds have been released from quarantine
- all herd testing is complete
Trace-out herds (herds that received animals from the infected herd)
- 5 trace-out herds have been released from quarantine
- all herd testing is complete
Notices to industry
