Avian influenza, or "bird flu", is a contagious virus that mainly affects domestic and wild birds. Avian influenza viruses are classified as low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) or highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), based on how severe they are in domestic birds. Some HPAI strains, like A(H5N1), can spread quickly in birds and cause severe illness. Some avian influenza viruses can also infect mammals and in rare cases, humans.
