North American African Swine Fever Forum

The North American African Swine Fever (NA-ASF) Forum was held in Ottawa from September 17 to 19, 2024. The fourth NA-ASF Forum continued the collaboration that began in 2019, when Canada first hosted the event. Since then, the United States, Mexico and Canada have co-hosted the forum, rotating its location among the 3 countries to continue to advance regional cooperation in the prevention and mitigation of the impact of ASF in the Americas.

This year's forum again brought together government and industry leaders, and decision-makers to address the ongoing threat of ASF to the Americas. Participants discussed progress made since 2019, learned from recent outbreaks in Europe and Asia, and identified areas requiring continued effort.

Event structure

The NA-ASF Forum 2024 comprehensively examined the past, present, and future of key areas critical to managing ASF, structured around the 4 pillars recognized in the original framework:

  • preparedness planning: enhancing readiness strategies for potential ASF outbreaks
  • enhanced biosecurity: exploring new measures and technologies to prevent ASF spread
  • ensuring business continuity: developing plans to maintain industry operations during outbreaks
  • coordinated risk communication: strengthening communication channels for effective information dissemination
