Effective June 17, 2021, the Russian Federation has temporarily suspended all imports of animal feed and pet food from Canada. The Russian Federation has indicated that the suspension is due to the presence of undeclared or unregistered genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in recent shipments and that any product shipped before June 17, 2021, will be subject to testing for the presence of GMO components before being allowed entry.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is looking into the matter in collaboration with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and Global Affairs Canada.

Exporters are reminded that they are responsible to meet the requirements of importing countries, including limits for GMO content established by the Russian Federation for pet food and animal feed.
