Summary of comments: Proposed amended livestock feed ingredients – Yeast-based ingredients

From September 18 to October 17, 2025, we conducted a 30-day public consultation on the proposed amended descriptions for chromium enriched yeast and selenium enriched yeast, and the proposed amended and reclassified descriptions for yeast irradiated dehydrated, yeast brewers dehydrated, yeast brewers liquid, and yeast torula dehydrated.

During the consultation period, we received 1 set of comments from stakeholders.

Summary of feedback received:

No comments were received on the amended and reclassified descriptions for yeast irradiated dehydrated, yeast brewers dehydrated, and yeast brewers liquid.

Comments received and our response on amended descriptions for chromium enriched yeast and selenium enriched yeast

The stakeholder provided positive feedback on including a required label guarantee for minimum percent organic selenium of the total selenium in the amended description for selenium enriched yeast. The stakeholder requested that in the respective descriptions, the required label guarantee for actual milligrams of total selenium per kilogram and actual milligrams of total chromium per kilogram be changed to a minimum guarantee or a range be allowed.

We are keeping the required label guarantee as an actual value and not changing it to a minimum or range because

  • an actual guarantee is needed to ensure users have accurate information to avoid over formulation that could result in exceeding the maximum level of chromium or selenium in the complete feed
  • as a part 2 single ingredient feed (SIF), additional useful guarantees, such as minimum total chromium, may be allowed at the time of registration

Comments received and our response on amended and reclassified description for yeast torula dehydrated

The stakeholder suggested that the former genus of this microorganism be included in the amended description to help prevent confusion.

To better align with the ingredient definition found in chapter 6 of the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) Official Publication, which mentions Candida utilis and Torulopsis utilis, and to prevent confusion within the feed industry as some still refer to the former species names, Candida utilis and Torulopsis utilis will be added to the amended description.

Outcome and next steps

Following this public consultation, we have finalized the amended and/or reclassified descriptions for the 6 yeast-based ingredients. These amended SIFs will be added to the CFIT at the next update.

We are committed to reviewing any new scientific information on the safety of any SIF. Anyone who becomes aware of new scientific information regarding the safety of these yeast-based SIFs are encouraged to contact us.
