Summary of comments: Proposed new and amended livestock feed ingredients – Bacillus licheniformis fermentation extract liquid, calcium formate, and DL-methionine hydroxy analogue isopropyl ester

Between April and May 2026, we ran two 30-day public consultations:

During this consultation period we received two sets of comments and feedback from stakeholders.

We also received comments on the amended SIF description that was added to the Canadian Feed Ingredients Table (CFIT) on May 11, 2026:

Summary of feedback received

We did not receive any comments that provided relevant information or any scientific data that should be considered before moving forward on the descriptions for:

  • Bacillus licheniformis fermentation extract liquid
  • calcium formate

Based on feedback received for DL-methionine hydroxy analogue isopropyl ester, we have modified this description. These amendments include:

  • removing the maximum inclusion rates for the targeted livestock species
  • combining the two required labelling statements to create a shorter one

As this is a part 2 SIF, this allows for greater flexibility based on the data supplied at the time of registration. All stakeholders with registered sources have been informed of this change.

Based on the comments received, the final amended description is:

2-501-001 DL-methionine hydroxy analogue isopropyl ester (or 2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutanoic acid isopropyl ester or isopropyl ester of DL-methionine hydroxy analogue or MHBi or MHAi)

is the product resulting from the esterification of DL-methionine hydroxy analogue with isopropanol. It contains a minimum of 90% racemic 2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutanoic acid isopropyl ester.

This ingredient is approved for use as a source of methionine activity in diets for lactating dairy cattle, lactating dairy sheep, and lactating dairy goats.

It shall be labelled with following statement:

"This ingredient is approved for use as a source of methionine activity in diets for lactating dairy cattle, lactating dairy sheep, and lactating dairy goats."

It shall be labelled with guarantees for minimum percent DL-methionine hydroxy analogue isopropyl ester, and a minimum percent methionine equivalence.

Outcome

Following these public consultations, we have finalized the new and amended SIF descriptions.

We are committed to reviewing any new scientific information on the safety of any SIF. Anyone who becomes aware of new scientific information regarding the safety of these SIFs is encouraged to contact us.
