Proposed updated directive for managing Bacterial Ring Rot (BRR) in seed potatoes: Closed consultation

Current status: Closed

This consultation ran from January 26, 2026, until February 24, 2026

About this consultation

The purpose of this consultation was to seek feedback on our new directive for managing Bacterial Ring Rot (BRR) in seed potatoes. BRR is a regulated pest under Part II of the Seeds Regulations, and any detection on a seed potato farm will result in the decertification of all seed potatoes on that farm. This makes strong management practices essential to protecting Canada’s seed potato industry.

The updated directive modernizes and consolidates 2 existing BRR plant health directives into a single, streamlined framework aligned with Part II of the Seeds Regulations. The changes aim to reduce the risk of BRR, support regulatory compliance and ensure a consistent national approach to seed potato health.

Who was the focus of this consultation

We were seeking comments from:

  • seed potato growers
  • purchasers of seed potatoes
  • seed potato industry associations and cooperatives
  • seed potato processors and distributors
  • agricultural service providers
  • approved laboratories
  • provincial and territorial plant health authorities
