About the Tables of Nutrient Guarantees and Conditions for Feed Labels

The Tables of Nutrient Guarantees and Conditions for Feed Labels is a document that is incorporated by reference (IBR) into the Feeds Regulations, 2024. This IBR document lists the guarantees that are required on a mixed feed label for a particular feed type and the optional guarantees that may be placed onto a mixed feed label, if certain conditions are met, that would not result in the mixed feed requiring product registration.

CFIA Incorporation by Reference Policy requires that a consultation be conducted before changes to IBR documents are made. Refer to Documents incorporated by reference under the Feeds Regulations, 2024 for additional information.

About the consultation

Currently, the Tables of Nutrient Guarantees and Conditions for Feed Labels identify ash as an optional guarantee that may be placed onto a label if it meets the following criteria:

  • is identified as a minimum, maximum or actual
  • shown as a %
  • only on fish feed labels

We propose to update table 2 (optional guarantees) for ash to expand the conditions from only fish feeds to include all livestock feeds as an optional guarantee on the label as a minimum, maximum, or actual percentage.

In addition, we are proposing to allow the acronym for equivalent crude protein (ECP or E.C.P.) in the guaranteed analysis if the feed has a guarantee for equivalent crude protein and the acronym is defined on the label, by way of a note or footnote.

Who is the focus of this consultation

Animal feed stakeholders, including:

  • suppliers of feed ingredients
  • commercial feed manufacturers
  • feed importers, distributors and retailers
  • industry associations
  • international trading partners

All comments are welcome from industry, governments, the public or other organizations or individuals.

How to participate

We are seeking feedback on the proposed changes to expand the conditions for the ash guarantee to all livestock feeds and allowing the acronym ECP, E.C.P. to appear in the guaranteed analysis if there is a footnote defining the acronym on the label.

Stakeholders are encouraged to share comments if there are:

  • concerns about expanding the optional ash guarantee to all livestock feed labels
  • concerns about allowing the use of the acronym ECP, E.C.P.

Comments can be sent by email to cfia.feedregmodernization-modernisationregalibetails.acia@inspection.gc.ca.
