Ottawa, November 30, 2016

Canada has notified the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) that as of November 30, 2016, Ontario is considered free of notifiable avian influenza. This declaration is based on the successful completion of a three month surveillance period following the eradication of notifiable avian influenza in commercial poultry, including duck farms and hatcheries in the province. As a result, Canada is now considered free of notifiable avian influenza in accordance with OIE guidelines.

The cooperation of the commercial poultry industry, individual bird owners, the Province of Ontario and local authorities were instrumental in the disease eradication effort in Ontario.

CanNAISS (Canadian Notifiable Avian Influenza Surveillance System) is ongoing throughout Canada.

Commercial and backyard bird owners are reminded that good biosecurity practices should be maintained in order to reduce the risk of avian influenza being reintroduced to domestic birds in Ontario.
