About the consultation
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) led a 60-day public consultation to seek comments on the proposed guidance document: How to determine when a plant-derived ingredient requires a feed pre-market assessment.
This guidance was intended to provide clarity regarding plant-derived ingredients that require a pre-market assessment under the Feeds Regulations. The guidance also aimed to elaborate on and describe the characteristics of a plant that could result in a novel feed ingredient.
Who was the focus of this consultation
The CFIA sought comments from:
- the general public
- academia
- plant developers
- industry associations
- livestock producer associations
- feed ingredient manufacturers
- not-for-profit organizations
- other government departments, and research institutions in the Canadian agriculture sector
- feed importers, exporters and retailers
All comments were welcomed from industry, governments, the public, or other organizations or individuals.
Key themes for discussion
The CFIA sought feedback on the proposed guidance to ensure that:
- the overall guidance document was clear
- the criteria for determining when an ingredient from plant sources would require a pre-market assessment was clear
- there were no other elements in the proposed guidance which would require further clarification
