CFIA risk-informed oversight using the Establishment-based Risk Assessment (ERA) model

Various resources for industry are listed, including the CFIA website (Establishment-based Risk Assessment model for food establishments), online training, risk profile and interpretation documents.

The diagram depicts 2 ovals that are interconnected, representing industry and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) roles respectively. In the first oval (on top), industry activities are listed, starting with the regulated party who can access their individual establishment profile through their My CFIA account. Parties can enter and modify their Additional Establishment Information (AEI) during their licensing process application or renewal. Regulated parties are responsible for updating/correcting their AEI if discrepancies are identified in their risk profile.

The AEI is used in combination with the compliance information extracted from CFIA databases to generate the ERA risk result and the establishment risk profile, which will be shared with industry via inspectors (short term) or a digital solution (upcoming). As of April 2022, these risk results are available for the dairy, maple, honey, egg, processed fruits and vegetables, fish and meat sectors.

The second oval (at the bottom) presents the agency's activities. The CFIA uses the establishment risk profile to plan inspection parameters for each risk category and for tactical planning of inspections. These activities contribute to the overall risk-informed oversight done by the CFIA inspectors.

The diagram also lists the various resources available for CFIA's employees, including training (accessible only on the Government of Canada network), operational guidance, food program direction (accessible only on the Government of Canada network – RDIMS 11010733) and the ERA Sharepoint site (accessible only on the Government of Canada network).
