April 7, 2017, Ottawa: On February 27, 2017, in Manitoba Provincial Court in Winnipeg, Mariner Neptune Fish and Seafood Company Ltd. pleaded guilty to one count of contravening subsection 5(1) of the Food and Drugs Act. The company was ordered to pay a fine of $25,000.00.
Subsection 5(1) of the Food and Drugs Act states that no person shall label, package, treat, process, sell or advertise any food in a manner that is false, misleading or deceptive or is likely to create an erroneous impression regarding its character, value, quantity, composition, merit or safety.
The CFIA's investigation determined that on or between January 27, 2014 and February 26, 2016, Mariner Neptune Fish and Seafood Company Ltd. labelled, packaged, sold and advertised a product in a manner that was false, misleading or deceptive. The company advertised, labelled and sold European Walleye (Zander) as Canadian Walleye (pickerel).
