Food safety investigation: Pistachios and pistachio products recalled due to possible Salmonella contamination

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) conducted a food safety investigation into pistachios and pistachio-containing products for possible Salmonella contamination. The CFIA has published multiple food recall warnings for various brands of pistachios and products that were made using the recalled pistachios. The pistachios involved in the related recalls were imported from Iran.

Investigation status

The CFIA's food safety investigation related to this outbreak has concluded.

However, the import restriction on pistachios from Iran remains in place. Consult What industry should know for more information.

The CFIA continues routine inspection and sampling of imported products, including pistachios and other nut products, to verify they meet Canadian food safety requirements.

If a food safety risk is identified, the CFIA will take appropriate action, including issuing recalls where warranted.

What consumers should know

1. Check your products

Compare the brand, product name and size, UPC and codes in the recall notification.

If your product information does not match, it is not part of the recall.

2. Do not consume recalled products

Throw them out or return them to the place of purchase.

If you are unsure whether your product is included, contact your retailer.

3. Follow public health advice

A public health advisory about imported pistachios states that it's safest to avoid pistachios from Iran and products made with them, due to possible Salmonella contamination.

4. If you feel sick

What industry should know

To reduce the risk of Salmonella infections, the CFIA continues to implement its temporary import ban for all pistachio and pistachio-containing products of Iranian origin while we work with the competent authority to address the issues that led to the restriction and verify compliance with Canadian food safety requirements.
