Information sessions
A series of information sessions are planned in January and February to discuss Canadian requirements for fertilizers and supplements.
An initial session took place on November 17, 2020. See the "What we heard" section for summaries of the discussions that took place.
About the initial presentation
At the annual Canadian Fertilizer Products Forum on November 17, 2020, CFIA experts presented:
- the Agency's regular annual program updates and report on service delivery standards
- an update on the development of metal standards for hydroponic fertilizers and supplements
- a proposed timeline for the implementation of mandatory registration of products that are or contain polymers
- a summary of the recent changes to the Fertilizers Regulations
The content focused mostly on the changes introduced by the updated Fertilizers Regulations and what these changes mean for regulated parties in the Canadian fertilizers industry.
Key topics
The following general themes were discussed:
- definitions and terminology
- general prohibitions
- safety standards
- exemptions from the act and regulations
- exemptions from registration – fertilizers
- exemptions from registration – supplements
- product specific labelling requirements
- record keeping
- guaranteed analysis
- phase-in implementation
- available resources and reference materials
Significant changes have been made to the scope and the requirements of the Fertilizers Regulations. With that in mind, participants were asked to identify topics of greatest interest to them and their business through a question and answer session, and a poll.
