General

  • Origin & Breeding: bred by Agriculture Canada from (Bake King x F58050) and selected at the Fredericton Research Station, New Brunswick, in 1969.
  • Year registered in Canada: 1980
  • Registration number: 2053
  • Maturity: mid-season

Botanical Features

  • Plants: medium sized, spreading; nodes not swollen; wings wavy.
  • Leaves: medium green, moderately and stiffly pubescent, overlapping.
    Terminal leaflets: ovate, cupped; tip cuspidate; base truncate, sometimes asymmetrical.
    Primary leaflets: ovate changing to broadly oblong towards the base, cupped; tip cuspidate; base truncate, sometimes asymmetrical, four pairs.
    Secondary leaflets: two to six pairs.
    Tertiary leaflets: few.
  • Flowers: numerous, light violet with an orange-green star, white tips; calyxes densely pubescent.
  • Tubers: long; smooth to lightly netted buff skin; medium deep eyes, evenly distributed; white flesh.
  • Sprouts: reddish purple.

Agricultural Features

High yielding variety; uniform tuber size, high percentage of large tubers. Good resistance to second growth.   Grades well with few culls. Good storage quality, needs through-the-pile ventilation. High specific gravity.  For seed production, plants should be 15 to 20 cm apart and for processing, 30 to 40 cm apart. Reduced fertilization decreases the difficulty in top-killing.

NOTE: foliage is very sensitive to applications of the herbicide metribuzin (Lexone®, Sencor®) so this herbicide must be applied well before emergence.

  • Utilization: excellent for boiling, baking, and French frying, unsuitable for chipping. Good potential for count carton trade and all season processing.
  • Chief Market: fresh market, processing for fries.

Reaction to Diseases

Moderately resistant: early blight, fusarium dry rot (Fusarium coeruleum and Fusarium sambucinum), phoma rot, rhizoctonia.
Susceptible: common scab, late blight, leaf roll, verticillium wilt and PVY.

NOTE: shows poor symptoms expression of PVY. Rogue under cloudy conditions.
