Highly pathogenic avian influenza: countries officially recognized by Canada as being free of the disease

Countries officially recognized by Canada as free of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) which is listed in the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) Terrestrial Animal Code.

Importation

Imports of live animals, germplasm, hatching eggs, and unprocessed/raw animal products and animal by-products from susceptible species originating from countries and/or zones not recognized as free are prohibited.

The importation of pet birds from countries and/or zones other than those listed below may be allowed.

Outbreak

During an outbreak in countries and/or zones usually recognized as free of HPAI, imports of live birds, hatching eggs, germplasm, and unprocessed/raw avian products and by-products are not permitted from the countries and/or zones not recognized as free. Additionally, imported live birds, poultry, and hatching eggs from other countries and/or zones may not travel through zones not recognized as free on their way to Canada.

  • Australia
  • Argentina
    • The whole country is under restriction as of February 23, 2026, until further notice. Shipments of raw/unprocessed meat or products from birds slaughtered before February 23, 2026 are eligible for import into Canada.
    • Raw/unprocessed meat or products from birds slaughtered between August 19, 2025 and October 14, 2025 are not eligible for import into Canada.
  • Brazil
    • Restrictions have been lifted as of December 24, 2025 for Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Goiás, Mato Grosso and the Federal District of Brazil. Shipments of raw/unprocessed meat or products from birds slaughtered between May 12, 2025 and December 23, 2025 are not eligible for import into Canada.
