The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) Shipment Tracker for food, plant and animal products is a tool for importers. It allows them to check the Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) for the Integrated Import Declaration (IID) status. It also helps industry check the inspection status of imports of meat and meat products. It works in real time for all import admissibility requests declared electronically.
Guidance for tracking your shipment
Who can access the tool
You can access the tool if you import CFIA regulated products through Integrated Import Declaration (IID). This includes importers, brokers, and carriers. Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) staff also have access to the tool.
You can track for all CFIA regulated imports of food, plant, animal, and meat products declared electronically. Parties from any country can use the tool with a CBSA transaction number or an Official Meat Inspection Certificate (OMIC) number.
Find out if a shipment was received, requires inspection or was released
Verify CFIA receipt of a transaction
After submitting your transaction via the IID, you can verify its admissibility status with the CFIA by entering the 14-digit CBSA transaction number or Official Meat Inspection Certificate (OMIC) number.
Status of paper declarations
The CFIA Shipment Tracker provides transaction statuses exclusively for shipments declared electronically using the IID. For non\IID declarations, contact the National Import Service Centre (NISC).
Check export status
The tool is designed for imported declarations transmitted electronically to the CFIA. It does not cover the status of export shipments.
Information and definitions of the different statuses you will find with the CFIA's Shipment tracker application:
"CFIA recommendation provided to CBSA. Please contact CBSA for details."
This status means that the CFIA has received and processed the transaction, and the CFIA has made a recommendation to the CBSA; however, further CBSA action is pending. Learn more about the CBSA's Electronic Data Interchange and portals.
"Transaction has not been received by CFIA"
This status means that the CFIA has not received an electronic declaration matching the criteria submitted.
"Invalid character"
Verify that your transaction number contains 14 digits.
"CFIA has received the declaration. The transaction will be reviewed pending receipt of the supporting documentation from CBSA"
When you read this status, please check again later, and contact the CBSA if the error message persists.
"The transaction has been rejected by CFIA. Broker/Importer please refer to your EDI/IID system for details"
This status means that further details are in the system and to contact the CBSA for details.
"The transaction has been cancelled by the broker or CBSA"
For additional information, contact your broker or the CBSA.
"The transaction has been released by CBSA. This transaction may be subject to further inspection by CFIA"
This status means that your transaction has been released. However, based on a full risk assessment and/or random selection, your goods might be subject to an inspection. Please refer to Importing food, plants or animals – inspection.canada.ca for guidance.
"The transaction has been closed. Please contact CBSA for details."
This message occurs when the transaction was submitted more than 90 days ago or cancelled less than 24 hours ago.
"The transaction has been released by CBSA"
Please check the inspection status of your shipment to see if an inspection is required.
"The transaction has been refused entry by CFIA. Broker/Importer please refer to your EDI/IID system for details."
Details are in the system. Contact the CBSA for additional information.
Final CBSA decision on a shipment
Importers are advised of the final CBSA decision on their shipment through a Release Notification System (RNS) notice. This means that CBSA has reviewed and released the shipment. Learn more about the CBSA's Electronic Data Interchange and portals.
Compatibility with CBSA systems
The CFIA Shipment Tracker is not a replacement for the CBSA RNS system. It offers importers and brokers specific information on the status of their electronic declaration for CFIA-regulated goods.
Troubleshooting errors
Multiple meat inspection status messages
If 2 different inspection statuses appear for a meat shipment when entering a transaction number, that number has been used previously to import meat products. To verify the meat inspection status, use the OMIC number instead.
Missing transaction or inspection status
You must confirm the electronic transmission of your declaration through the IID. If CFIA does not receive an electronic declaration through the IID, a transaction status cannot be displayed.
Verify the accuracy of the 14-digit CBSA transaction number and/or the OMIC number (meat shipments only) entered. The system will display the transaction and inspection status.
Reminder: import transactions declared in any way other than the IID will not display a result.
If you encounter difficulties retrieving a transaction status, contact the National Import Service Centre (NISC).
Reasons that may justify a rejection or refusal when importing meat or meat products:
- missing 1 or more digits of an import permit number
- absence of mandatory declaration(s) on an official document
- lack of information such as seal number, container number and/or shipping marks on the OMIC
- altered official documents
- the weight on the OMIC has been altered or differs from the electronically declared weight
- unsigned or undated OMIC
- previously-used shipping marks
- unauthorized export establishment
- OMIC number has been previously used
Reject messages and corrective actions
If the Safe Food for Canadians (SFC) licence number on your import declaration is entered incorrectly, or the licence that you declare is invalid/expired, your transaction will be rejected. To learn more about possible reject messages, reasons for the rejected transaction and how to correct them, refer to Importing food with a valid Safe Food for Canadians licence.
Information retention
We will retain your inspection status for 90 days. A search that exceeds a 90-day timeframe will display: "Inspection status not available – Shipment entered Canada more than 90 days ago."
Note: The CFIA Shipment Tracker for food, plant and animal products is prepared for the convenience of importers and brokers and has no official sanction. For all purposes of interpreting and applying the law, users should consult Canadian acts and regulations.
