Stop the spread in every season

Favourite seasons may come and go, but addressing the spread of invasive pests remains a top priority year-round.

By recognizing and reporting invasive pests, you protect the health of our plants and trees so you can enjoy your favourite activities—whether camping, hiking, gardening, or spending time outdoors—for many years to come.

Invasive species pose a significant threat to our biodiversity and ecosystems, and human activities can worsen their spread throughout the year. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is here to help you with some tips and tricks to follow no matter what season it is:

This fall

As we begin closing our gardens and cottages and cleaning up yards for the cooler season, be sure to thoroughly clean all your equipment before moving it or storing it. Your garden or yard will thank you next spring. That includes looking for egg masses or invasive pests on patio furniture and décor, too.

Your camping season may also be coming to an end; be sure to inspect your RV and camping gear for signs of invasive species before storing or moving them.

What to do if you find something

  • Familiarize yourself with invasive pests
  • Take a picture if you spot something you don't recognize and report it to the CFIA
  • Scrape off egg masses or manually remove larvae or adults by soaking in soapy water or alcohol
  • Stay until the pests have been removed and destroyed

It is up to all of us to stop the spread; we hope you share these tips and tricks and are well-equipped to be a plant health hero!
