- any restrictions on use rates that are found in the SIF definition in Schedules IV and V must be reflected on the label of the SIF
- the directions for use should reflect how to use the mixed feed for its intended purpose
- for livestock feeds containing selenium that are intended for dairy and dry cows, a table of maximum allowable daily intakes for the feed must appear on the label
- for medicated feeds (other than veterinary prescription feeds), including medicated customer formula feeds, complete directions for use must be as prescribed in the CMIB
- for veterinary prescription feeds, directions for use of the feed must be as indicated on the veterinary prescription and must include the period of medication during which the medicated feed is to be fed to the livestock

- for livestock feeds that are to be fed to ruminants, horses and rabbits, the use or feeding rates of the grain ration (or complete feed portion) may be expressed on an "as fed" or on a "DM" basis
- for free-choice feeds (supplements, blocks, trace mineral, minerals feeds, etc.) the estimated daily intake of the feed should be indicated on the labels (for example, kg/head/day or g/head/day)
- for mixed feeds containing non-feed products, the directions for use are required on the label as set out in the Compendium of Non-Feed Products (CNFP)

Guaranteed analysis |
- the guaranteed analysis must reflect the purpose of the livestock feed
- guaranteed analysis should appear as a header and should be in bold characters
- for SIFs, the label must contain all of the required guarantees that are specified for that SIF as indicated in Schedules IV and V
- guarantees are not required on the label for customer formula feeds
- the required guarantees and the unit to express nutrient values are set by specific livestock feed types in table 3 of Schedule I
- if guarantees other than the ones allowed in table 3 appear on the label, the livestock feed must be registered
- the nutrient values when fed as per the directions for use must be in the range as prescribed for the specific livestock species in table 4 of Schedule I

- if the SIF label has other label guarantees not set out in Schedules IV and V for that particular SIF, the SIF must be registered
- if a mixed feed label has other label guarantees not set out in tables 3 and 4 of Schedule I, the mixed feed must be registered (for example, bound minerals, phytase activity, etc.)

- for all livestock feeds, including customer formula feeds, if nutrient levels exceed the maximum nutrient values set out in the Tables of Maximum Nutrient Values for Feeds, the feed is non-compliant
- nutrients that are supplied at significant amounts should be guaranteed on the label to allow the purchaser to make an informed decision
Other label guarantees:
- if the SIF label has other label guarantees not set out in the CFIT for that particular SIF, the SIF must be registered
- if the mixed feed label has other label guarantees not set out in table 1 or table 2 of the Tables of Nutrient Guarantees and Conditions for Feed Labels, the mixed feed must be registered (for example, linoleic acid, omega-3 fatty acids, etc.)

List of ingredients |
- for SIFs, the names of antioxidants or preservatives used in the manufacture of the SIF must appear on the label when required by the definition listed in Schedules IV or V
- for mixed feeds, if the list of SIFs appears on the label, the SIFs must be identified as per their approved name(s) in schedules IV or V
- non-specialty feeds, imported and domestic, must have either the complete list of ingredients or the following statement on the label "A list of ingredients used in this feed may be obtained from the manufacturer or registrant"
- for a customer formula feed, the list of ingredients or the generic statement is not required on the label
- when registered feeds are included within the mixed feed, the registered feed must be identified by its registration number and approved brand name or name
- for imported mixed feeds, which must be registered by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), if the list of ingredients is not on the label, a separate document with the list of ingredients is required to accompany the application for registration
- the list of ingredients is required on labels for all specialty feeds
- for livestock feeds manufactured in Canada, the embedded vitamin D and vitamin E can be identified in the list of ingredients on the label as vitamin D registered source and vitamin E registered source
The registration number of these vitamins must be provided with the list of ingredients provided with the application for registration
- for imported livestock feeds, the embedded vitamin D and vitamin E must be indicated by the registration number on the label or if the list of ingredients is not on the label, the registration number must be included with the list of ingredients provided with the application for registration

- If the SIF description as set out in the CFIT indicates that non-nutritional ingredients such as carriers, antioxidants, pelleting aids, anticaking agents, etc. used in the manufacture of the SIF are to be indicated on the SIF label, they are to be stated on the SIF label
- for mixed feeds, other than customer formula feeds, the label must contain the name of each SIF used in the formulation of the mixed feed or the following statement: "A list of the ingredients used in this feed may be obtained from the manufacturer or registrant"
- the list of ingredients may appear on the principal display panel or be provided on an insert, if there is reference on the principal display panel to where this information is located
- all SIFs used in a mixed feed must be approved and listed in the CFIT
- if the label includes the full list of ingredients, then the SIFs that are present in the livestock feed must be identified in the list of ingredients by 1 of their approved names as stated in the CFIT
- if a mixed feed contains a part 2 SIF, the SIF must come from a registered source, and the valid registration number must appear after 1 of the approved SIF names in parentheses
- if the mixed feed contains a registered mixed feed, the name of the registered feed is to appear immediately followed by its valid registration number in parenthesis
- if a mixed feed contains a non-registered mixed feed in the list of ingredients, the name of each SIF found in the non-registered mixed feed must appear on the label or the following reference statement "A list of the ingredients used in this feed may be obtained from the manufacturer or registrant" must be included
- for imported mixed feeds, if the list of ingredients is not on the label, a separate document with the list of ingredients is required to accompany the application for registration
- the list of ingredients is required on labels for all registered specialty feeds
- some mixed feeds (including specialty feeds) with permissible claims may also require the full list of ingredients on the label as a condition of that claim;

- collective terms like "animal by-products" or "cereal grain by-products" are not permitted
- some terms like antioxidant, flavouring agent or preservative are allowed in the list of ingredients as long as the valid registration number follows in parenthesis
- For livestock feeds manufactured in Canada, the embedded vitamin D and vitamin E can be identified in the list of ingredients on the label as vitamin D registered source and vitamin E registered source, without indicating the registration number
