With the recent publication of the Feed Regulations, 2024 in Canada Gazette Part II, there are changes in regards to exemption from registration for mixed feeds. The exemption from registration criteria are found in section 6 of the regulations and more information is available in the list of livestock feeds requiring approval or registration. Many registered mixed feeds now meet an exemption from registration criteria and will not be required to be renewed when their registrations expire. Note: all imported mixed feeds will continue to require registration before being imported into Canada until the licencing requirements come into effect on December 17, 2025. These changes mean that:
An application for a mixed feed made in Canada that is currently in the queue and meets the registration exemption criteria with an "on-hold" or "in progress" status in My CFIA may be voluntarily withdrawn by the applicant. Note that the fees will not be returned. To withdraw an application, the applicant must provide the reference number of the application in an email and send it to cfia.paso-bpdpm.acia@inspection.gc.ca
An application for a mixed feed made in Canada that is currently in the queue and meets the registration exemption criteria with an "open submitted" status in My CFIA may be cancelled and fees will not be charged. To withdraw an application, the applicant must connect to the service request dashboard in My CFIA, and then select the open-submitted application followed by selecting "withdraw application"
Registrants may choose to maintain their registrations for exempted mixed feeds for various reasons, including where registration is required to obtain a certificate of free sale for export purposes (refer to RG-9 Documentation to support market access for livestock feeds – mixed feeds and single ingredient feeds).
