Background
The Feeds Regulations, 2024 require a proponent to submit a pre-market application for new feed ingredients or SIFs that have been modified such that they differ from an approved SIF or SIFs that are for a new purpose. We evaluate the information in the application to establish that the SIF is safe, effective and labelled correctly.
Approved SIFs are listed and described in the Canadian Feed Ingredients Table (CFIT), which is incorporated by reference (IBR) into the Feeds Regulations, 2024. Our Incorporation by Reference Policy requires that a consultation be conducted before changes to IBR documents are made. Refer to Documents incorporated by reference under the Feeds Regulations, 2024 for additional information.
About the evaluation
Historically, our Animal Feed Program (AFP) has evaluated fermentation products produced by Trichoderma reesei and Trichoderma longibrachiatum. In the past, these two species were considered synonyms. With advances in genomics technologies, including whole genome sequencing and phylogenomic and phylogenetic analyses, it has been identified that Trichoderma reesei and Trichoderma longibrachiatum are actually two separate, distinct species. Consequently, to reflect this change in the taxonomic classification of these Trichoderma species, the AFP has decided to create separate species-specific descriptions for fermentation products produced by Trichoderma reesei to reflect that these two microorganisms are separate species.
The evaluation considered information related to:
- the safety of feeding these SIFs to livestock with respect to animal health
- the safety of foods derived from livestock that eat these SIFs
- the safety of workers/bystanders exposed to these SIFs
- environmental safety
- the fit-for-purpose and efficacy of these SIFs for the intended livestock species
The results of our historical evaluation of available scientific data support the safety and efficacy of Trichoderma reesei fermentation product liquid, Trichoderma reesei fermentation product dehydrated, Trichoderma reesei fermentation solubles liquid, Trichoderma reesei fermentation solubles condensed, Trichoderma reesei fermentation solubles dehydrated, Trichoderma reesei fermentation extract condensed, and Trichoderma reesei fermentation extract dehydrated as a source of enzymes, fermentation substances or other microbial metabolites.
Therefore, we recommend that Trichoderma reesei fermentation product liquid, Trichoderma reesei fermentation product dehydrated, Trichoderma reesei fermentation solubles liquid, Trichoderma reesei fermentation solubles condensed, Trichoderma reesei fermentation solubles dehydrated, Trichoderma reesei fermentation extract condensed, and Trichoderma reesei fermentation extract dehydrated be approved and added to the CFIT, accordingly.
In addition, as a result of these proposed descriptions for fermentation products from Trichoderma reesei and to standardize the wording in the descriptions for these types of SIFs, we have decided to amend the descriptions for Trichoderma longibrachiatum fermentation product liquid, Trichoderma longibrachiatum fermentation product dehydrated, Trichoderma longibrachiatum fermentation solubles liquid, Trichoderma longibrachiatum fermentation solubles condensed, Trichoderma longibrachiatum fermentation solubles dehydrated, Trichoderma longibrachiatum fermentation extract condensed, and Trichoderma longibrachiatum fermentation extract dehydrated found in subclass 6.21 (Fermentation products non viable) of part 1 of the CFIT.
Therefore, we recommend the descriptions for Trichoderma longibrachiatum fermentation product liquid, Trichoderma longibrachiatum fermentation product dehydrated, Trichoderma longibrachiatum fermentation solubles liquid, Trichoderma longibrachiatum fermentation solubles condensed, Trichoderma longibrachiatum fermentation solubles dehydrated, Trichoderma longibrachiatum fermentation extract condensed, and Trichoderma longibrachiatum fermentation extract dehydrated found in subclass 6.21 (Fermentation products non-viable) in class 6 of part 1 of the CFIT to be amended and the amended SIF descriptions replace the current SIF descriptions in the CFIT, accordingly.
Finally, we recommend that Trichoderma reesei 1391A fermentation solubles condensed, a part 2 SIF, be removed from the CFIT as this SIF would meet the proposed description for Trichoderma reesei fermentation solubles condensed.

Amended SIF descriptions
We intend to amend the existing SIF descriptions for 7 Trichoderma longibrachiatum fermentation products under subclass 6.21 (Fermentation products non viable) of class 6 (Non-nutritive ingredients) in part 1 of the CFIT.
- Trichoderma longibrachiatum fermentation product liquid
- Trichoderma longibrachiatum fermentation product dehydrated
- Trichoderma longibrachiatum fermentation solubles liquid
- Trichoderma longibrachiatum fermentation solubles condensed
- Trichoderma longibrachiatum fermentation solubles dehydrated

Finally, we intend to remove the existing description for Trichoderma reesei 1391A fermentation solubles condensed (2-621-005) under subclass 6.21 (Fermentation products non viable) of class 6 (Non-nutritive ingredients) found in part 2 of the CFIT. This existing part 2 SIF description meets the proposed description for Trichoderma reesei fermentation solubles condensed, and therefore it would be redundant to maintain this existing description in the CFIT.
Additional information
Creating separate descriptions for fermentation products produced by Trichoderma reesei
Trichoderma reesei and Trichoderma longibrachiatum were historically regarded as the same species. However, through advancements in genomics technologies and the updated phylogenomic and phylogenetic analyses, they are now recognized as distinct species. While Trichoderma reesei and Trichoderma longibrachiatum remain closely related and share similar ecological roles, it is important that SIF descriptions reflect modern scientific and taxonomic understanding.
Therefore, we are proposing separate species-specific descriptions for fermentation products by Trichoderma reesei and the removal of reference to Trichoderma reesei in Trichoderma longibrachiatum-specific descriptions, to allow for differentiation between ingredients produced by these two separate, distinct species.
Removing alternative names and minor amendments to the existing descriptions
We have identified that some of the amended SIF descriptions do not need additional alternative names, as the common SIF name for each of them provides enough information to recognize them appropriately. In addition, we have made minor amendments to the existing descriptions to align with the standardized wording being proposed in the Trichoderma reesei descriptions and the wording being used in recent descriptions for these types of SIFs.
Removing Trichoderma reesei 1391A fermentation solubles condensed
We have decided to remove the existing description for Trichoderma reesei 1391A fermentation solubles condensed found in subclass 6.21 (Fermentation products non viable) of class 6 (Non-nutritive ingredients) in part 2 of the CFIT. This existing SIF description would meet the proposed new description for Trichoderma reesei fermentation solubles condensed, which will be placed into part 1 of the CFIT, and aligns with other fermentation products produced by Trichoderma reesei being placed into part 1 of the CFIT. For these types of SIFs, we are moving away from including the strain information in the description and instead describing to the species level.
It would not be appropriate to restrict the production of this fermentation solubles condensed product to a particular strain when other fermentation product types are not strain-specific when using the Trichoderma reesei species. No unique safety concerns have been identified between fermentation product types. Please note that several strains of Trichoderma reesei have been used for the production of many ingredients and products including enzymes. If a production strain has a novel trait, the ingredient would be considered a novel feed, which requires a pre-market evaluation under the established regulatory framework.
